hiphop - aesop rock, mr lif, company flow, cannibal ox, antipop conortium (especially arrythmia), non-phixion, most of the anticon stuff (especially the s/t clouddead record. ten's ok too, but the s/t's way better)

books - anything by hp lovecraft (not the poetry), cormac mccarthy, peter watts, george bernard shaw, octavia butler. fuck, too many.. if i'm being lazy, then the science fiction masterworks list is pretty much all solid - some not so hot, but that might just be me.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SF_Masterworks
other specifics:
eden, eden, eden - pierre guyotat
bastard out of carolina - dorothy allison
the kingdom of evil - ben hecht
dennis cooper (if you want to feel physically ill, the sluts will probably suffice)
russell hoban - riddley walker
a short walk in the hindu kush - i forget who this is by
the and ass saw the angel - nick cave
my brain isn't working and i can't think of much more...

Public Enemy, Quannum for rap. 'Illuminatus!', 'The Raw Shark Texts', 'A Confederacy of Dunces' and 'Gormenghast' for books.
emmateaandbourbons on May 23rd, 2008 10:11 pm (UTC)
been meaning to read 'the raw shark texts' since i saw you or kyly post about it before, sounds pretty ace, as do the others. 'gormenghast' has been sitting on my bookshelf for ages, maybe i'll finally get round to it now!

can never go wrong with public enemy, luckily ripped them on to the PC before I sold all my CDs.
insane_hopeinsane_hope on May 22nd, 2008 03:50 pm (UTC)
Public enemy is about as much hip hop/rap as I go for. Lets see on books.. the art of war, 1776, a walk in the woods, so early Hemingway is always good. Alsoa good long read is Shogun, if you get into it you won't want to put it down, and it's over a thousand pages, so it'll keep you occupyed.
emmateaandbourbons on May 23rd, 2008 10:18 pm (UTC)
over a thousand pages, bloody hell! it must be good then usually the sheer size would put me off. will check some of those out cheers.

Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip gets my vote, rap-wise.
Joe recommends Wu Tang Clan, also.
emmateaandbourbons on May 23rd, 2008 10:21 pm (UTC)
ah yeah, dans le sac vs scroobius pip were ace at leeds! wu tang seems to be a popular choice indeed.
TorturetheFuckingPigst_f_p on May 23rd, 2008 12:51 am (UTC)
Wu-tang clan-essential shit. they are to hip-hop what Crass is to punk
Saul Williams-a really good slam poet who has instrumentals added to what he does
Talib Kweli-pretty good conscious hip-hop
Aesop Rock-genius shit.
El-P-ditto
Cannibal Ox-ditto again
DangerDoom-adult swim-themed raps. really good
Eminem-I know, I know. pretty much all of the offensive stuff he says is just to piss people off. when he's serious, though, he makes really good points and has dead-on commentary
emmateaandbourbons on May 23rd, 2008 10:21 pm (UTC)
cheers! i figured you would have some good answers to this!

I'm not on your friends list but I recommend Hieroglyphics, my all time fav! Also A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul (I heart 90s hip hop)

As for books, Omnivore's Dilemma, it's about the politics, economic, cultural effect of food. Really good.
